Reviews & ratings London - Lille
Recently traveled by Eurostars from London to Lille to attend a conference. I traveled second class as this was a journey of approx 80 minutes and I considered that the short journey was not worth a first class fare. Great journey with no hassles. Would do again.
Comfort, on time, quick boarding process
The trip was good. The check-in at Lille Euroupe is confusing. Fortunately we met a young lady on the same train that helped us and explained the "system"....
this is a continuation from my review of CDG to Lille. Once at Lille TGV station staff were great corrected our tickets that had expired because of a late train - an hour late. When on the Eurostar 1st class is great, the service and hosts were lovely. It is quite a walk out of St-Pancras with the family and bags so get a trolley (for the bags not the family!). I would try leaving from gare du Nord or the like rather than Lille next time as swapping trains is a pain when you have lots of luggage.
In our experience on this rail trip and on similar trains and trips, this was our biggest hassle. Otherwise the journey experience is very good. There is reasonably good storage above the seating for smaller travel bags. However, when you are travelling as part of an international journey for 5 weeks as we were you have 20 - 23 kg cases for all that you need. These have to be stored in special luggage racks, and these racks were in high demand on this trip and others.
Last travelled on the train 5 years ago. Pleased to report that the trip taken was just as memorable. Expectations through customer announcements were well managed. Would I take the trip again? Yes indeed, and would encourage anyone who has not done so to do the same.
My husband wanted to do the Euro Rail trip just to say he had been in the Channel tunnel. The trip was quick and very comfortable. The staff at both points were friendly and knowledgeable. We did find it frustrating we had to change trains and the two offices were not one business. We would recommend the trip to our friends and family.
The transit to London had to wait at the airport and the Immigration clearance into UK was done twice one entry, check on exit of Lille, and one on entry at St Pancras. Wonder why twice and duplication. At the check point atthe clearing point I inadvertently left my back pack at Lille and by the time I realised the train is already moving. The good thing was the Train Manager paged for me and informed me the bag in safe keeping at Lille airport. I had some cash and my Ipad and all intact. The bad thing was, the Train Manager promised it can be couriered to my apartment address in London and it somehow it never happened. I checked with Eurostar, St Pancras, and they mentioned that would not happen but if it is from Belgium ok! Looks like the working coop with Belgium is better then the French rail!? I had to buy a new ticket and travel to Lille and return on the same day to collect the bag. Compliments, all the content was intact and highly appreciated the Lost property staff for their honesty..
Cleanliness is fine, the environment is comfortable and quiet.
The English announcement was very difficult to understand. If it wasn't for fellow English traveller, we would have missed the stop to get off.
Very helpful train staff
Train from Lille to London was supposed to leave at around three forty/ The train was delayed at the dock and at the tunnel entrance. We were sitting in the train at the dock about forty five minutes/ we got to London more then an hour late.
Our trip on Eurostar began at St Pancras. While waiting for boarding there appeared to be a lack of available seating for passengers. Once on board, the seats were very comfortable, the train was almost soundless inside, and the 1½ hour trip went by very quickly. All in all we were very happy with our experience.
Although we went though French and British border control at Lille, there were long queues on arrival at St Pancras when we had to go through British Customs - why, I am not clear, because they only glanced at our passports and didn't even ask any questions about dutiable goods or anything. Having cleared border control in Lille we expected just to stroll out of the station at St Pancras instead of have a 15 minute queue.
It was definitely a pleasure traveling with this train on my vacation . very punctual. Just try and accommodate for more large baggage space, but I suppose during peak season it is acceptable.
