The capital Istanbul is of course famous for the many mosques, bazaars and unmissable Bosphorus view. From Istanbul take the Ankara Express train to Ankara and see the littering of fascinating archaeological sites and crammed-together houses in the old quarter.
The best way to experience the landscape is from the Dalaman River, try white-water rafting for a white-knuckle experience. Or see Turkey from the air with an early morning hot-air balloon flight over the stunning moonscape of Cappadocia in central Anatolia.
Turkey is a haven for shopping. Visit Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar for the world’s largest market, then head uptown on the to enjoy the cut-price fashion goods and clothing in the department stores along Istiklal Caddesi or upmarket Nisantasi.
Different areas of Turkey have their local specialties, in the capital visit Kanlica to enjoy the yogurt, then hop on a ferry to Bursa for its Iskendar Kebab. From Istanbul take the 6 Eylül Ekspres train 5 ½ hours across Turkey to Izmir for kadınbudu Kofte, made from beef and rice it’s completely moorish.
Relax in a steamy Turkish bath, known as a hammam, and have a scrub and massage. They’re available all over Turkey, and afterwards you’ll feel refreshed and ready to take on anything.
