Don’t Miss
Have your photo taken next to the city’s icon and UNESCO site, the Belem Tower. See more than 25,000 sea creatures at the Oceanarium – the first aquarium ever to incorporate world ocean habitats within a single environment.
Retail Therapy
Well-known brands are represented on Chiado, or for popular high street stores visit the oldest shopping district in Lisbon, Baixa. Fancy designer boutiques and restaurants adorn the Avenida da Liberdade.
Eat and Drink
Head to the central Bairro Alto for a great night out, the streets will become crammed but the atmosphere will be electric. You’ll find plenty of restaurants on the Rua dos Correeiros – try the Portuguese specialties caldo verde, a common Portuguese soup or baccalhau (salted cod) washed down with vinho verde (green wine).
Hidden Gem
The Ribeira Nova behind Cais do Sodré train station houses an enormous food market. Get there early to see donkeys arriving with heaving wicker baskets and fishermen mooring with their catch.
Day Trip
Regular trains link Lisbon’s Rossio Station to Sintra in less than an hour. Sintra blooms with colourful flora and here you’ll find the Gruta das Fadas (Cave of the Fairy). At midnight a fairy appears in the large granite boulder near the Jardim da Pena’s main gate – whether you believe it or not it’s a beautiful setting.
