Don’t Miss
Head to the central market and pass wonderful 14th century step-gabled houses before admiring the statues of patriotic heroes in the square. Join a canal boat tour to see the city in style. The Diamond Museum houses a range of exhibits outlining the whole process from mining to putting the ring on your finger.
Retail Therapy
Take your time to walk through the historic city centre, added to the Unesco’s World Heritage List. Travel between past and present along busy squares, refreshing parks and quiet, intimate cobbled streets, and do not forget to visit the modest almshouses as well as the imposing patrician’s homes! Bruges has preserved the medieval city centre where the current city boundaries still coincide exactly.
Eat and Drink
Of course chocolate is a must, you can get anything covered in chocolate here. Visit the Choco-Story Museum for the free samplers after the tour. Mussels and frites are a popular dish; wash them down with one of the many local beers.
Hidden Gem
Bruges’ flat terrain makes it a cycle-friendly city. Make the most of the scenery and find your own hidden gems on a self-guided tour of the Flemish countryside. Cycle track maps are available at the tourist office.
Day Trip
Belgium has an excellent train system. An hour from Brugge train station the town of Ypres has been transformed into a memorial to all those who died in the Great War. See the cemeteries and monuments erected for the soldiers.
