La Rochelle, an old fortified city facing the ocean

La Rochelle’s boat-bobbing harbour and arch-covered streets feel more Mediterranean than Atlantic. Medieval defence towers guard the entrance to the Old Port, where diners feast on curried mussels at waterside restaurants. Cross the bridge to Île de Ré for a lazy day on the beach.

In the historic centre, between the arch-covered streets, you can see a large number of graceful timber-framed or sculpted houses from the 15th to the 18th centuries.

Don’t miss the visit of one of the most beautiful Town Hall in France, dating back from the Renaissance period, where you can learn the history of the city. Have a closer look to the Medieval defence towers which can be explored and to the imposing "Grosse Horloge" from the 14th century: old gate in the ramparts located between the port and the city.

Facing the old port, the Aquarium will immerse you into the fascinating world of the ocean.

  • "Good value"
TGV travel between La Rochelle on the west coast and Paris, was an easy and affordable way to travel between the two cities. Arrives at Montparnasse station from which most of the inner suburbs are just a moderate taxi fare away – even over the river. Only minor negative about the train was that the carriage interior felt like it was ready for a revamp. Not dirty or dilapidated – just a bit tired. But I"d still do this trip again.
  • "A great way to travel"
I learned that I could take the train direct to Charles de Gaulle Airport and had no trouble changing my ticket at the station. The day was dark and foggy, and as the morning skies lightened, the countryside began to roll past swathed in mists. It was intensely beautiful. A magnificent way to end a vacation. Clean. Fast. Comfortable. Convenient. Relaxing. The change of train in Poitiers couldn't have been easier. Plenty of space to stow luggage. I wish we had high-speed trains in the US!
  • "Great trip"
I have often travelled on the TGV trains, and apart from the lottery of storage space for luggage, it's almost always a good experience. This trip was up there with the rest of them.
  • "MASTER"
EVERYBODY HAS TO STEP IN AND ENJOY THE COMFORT. NORHING MORE TO SAY.
