While you're there

Calais, have you ever take a train… under the sea?

You will find Calais in the French department Pas de Calais between the Channel and the North Sea. Only 38 kilometres away from the English coasts, Calais is world-known thanks to the Channel Tunnel and of course its famous lace.

Start your discovery of Calais by climbing up to the top of the lighthouse to appreciate a magnificent view onto sea, countryside and town.

Take a walk in the 16th century Citadel of which two Doors are listed Historical Monuments. Be amazed by the "Red Fort" built on stilts in the 17th century and the "Nieulay Fort" restored from 1989. Don’t miss the 38 meters high "Tour du Guet" from the 13th century, one of the oldest monuments of Calais, located nearby the famous "Place d’Armes".

Take time to see the lovely Notre-Dame church in its specific Tudor style and the most famous sculpture by Rodin: "Les Bourgeois de Calais".

When we were dropped off at bus station from the ferry bus we weren't sure how to get a bus to the Railway station in Calais so we taxied. The journey was comfortable and there was a storage area for our bags. We taxied from Paris Nord station to b
  • "Calais ville"
We booked our ticket on-line prior to travelling from Lille to Calais-ville . THe ticket code given on the confirmation did not work in the automatic ticketing machine and apparently this is the situation when booking from some countries (including New Zealand). Also it was not made clear that there are two stations in Lille but fortunately we had allowed some time and were able to walk to the new station about 800mtrs away. Also if you travel to Calais-ville keep in mind that there is no lift or escalator to get you to the exit and the stairs are steep and long especially if you have heavy bags.
  • "Comfortable but expensive"
Comfortable but a bit exepensive !
  • "Calais to London"
The train was very quick and easy. The seating was quite crammed in some carriages and empty in others which caused issues for luggage. The Calais TGV station has no food services after 2:00pm which seems a bit odd.
