Bern, the capital of Switzerland

Bern is the capital city of the Swiss Confederation and the fourth most populous city in Switzerland. Bern is surrounded on three sides by the river Aare, and is located just west of the centre of Switzerland and north of the Bernese Alps. The magnificent countryside around Bern was formed by glaciers during the Ice Age. The historic old town of Bern, is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Old Town will delight you with its covered arcades, cobbled streets and decorated façades. Discover the local wonders such as the Das Berner Münster (Cathedral of Bern), the Zeitglockenturm (Clock Tower) and the Federal Palace. The Clock Tower is one of Bern’s most important sights.

Enjoy the view across the city and the snow-capped Bernese mountains when you are at the top of the Cathedral’s tower, Switzerland’s highest church tower! The Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Federal Palace, also known as the Parliament Building or the Bundeshaus is an impressive and beautiful building has two wings and a 64 metre high dome. In front, is found the Parliament Square, which serves as a gathering point for inhabitants and as a market place every weekend.

Try local specialities such as the Bernerplatte (slabs of salt pork, beef tongue, smoked bacon, pork ribs, and mild pork sausage cooked down in broth) or Berner Rösti (shredded potatoes fried with onions, butter, and chunks of bacon).

Bern has one of Europe’s longest shopping promenades, with some 6 km of arcades home to trendy boutiques, jewellery shops, shopping malls and traditional markets.

  • "Enjou our trip!"
We as a family enjoy our trip a lot! The only problem we experienced was that there was not enough space for all the people's lugguage. No complaints further.
  • "Exploring Switzerland"
We had a wonderful time, exploring Switzerland by going from place to place by train. The trains were punctual, clean, comfortable and we would do it again. We took the train from London to Paris and then from Paris to Berne. We then travelled to Lucerne, St Moritz, Zermat and then to Geneva to fly back to London.
  • "Euro Train is prefect"
Euro train is prefect, highly recommand taken by train as travelling Euro
  • "Fantastic"
    Everything perfect as expected
  • "Bern-Milano"
Wonderful train, wonderful service, very comfortable and convenient...worth of paid money
  • "Kind of a pain"
Had to get off the train, board a bus, then back on the train. No reason given why. Entered a very long tunnel and windows were left open and the diesel fumes were unbearable.
  • "Excellent service"
Puts UK train travel in a bad light! This was quiet, comfortable and very well organised. Slight delay due to signal problem was unavoidable.
  • "Bien"
    Excelente
  • "Average"
The anticipated train has been annulled. The substitutive convoy was uncomfortable and not very comforting.
  • "Slightly disappointed"
I travelled in TGV lyria for the second time in 3 years. The first time was in 2010 with my wife and children and we travelled from Rome to Florence and later from Florence to Venice. Though trains are still as punctual, the upholstry is now a little worn and the train looked more untidy. The W/C close to our seats was full and overflowing and on the way back dirty. The staff however was extremely helpful and courtious. All in all the experience wasnt quite upto the standards I had come to expect from my last trip.
