Barcelona city guide

Barcelona, the cultural capital of Catalonia in Spain

Standing out as the cultural capital of Catalonia, Barcelona has an avant-garde and yet charismatic feel. Offering modern buildings, medieval edifices, creative cuisine and a buzzing nightlife, Barcelona is one of the top European travel destinations.

The city also hosts the Camp Nou stadium, home to world famous football team: The FC Barcelona.

In Barcelona, you will find the work of the famous Antoni Gaudí, an artist, architect and figurehead of Catalan Modernism. La Sagrada Família, the city’s iconic landmark, is prided as Antoni Gaudí’s best piece of work. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage, it attracts thousands of visitors every day. Park Güell is another of Gaudí’s creations. It has fantastic pavilions, stairways and a magnificent view over the city. The Casa Batlló is also worth a detour. With a spectacular façade, it has become an icon of the city. Discover buildings from Catalonia’s Golden Era and Roman ruins in Barri Gòtic, the oldest district of Barcelona before heading to La Rambla, Barcelona’s most famous street. Don’t forget to have a peek at the Agbar tower, which is beautifully illuminated with more than 4,500 LEDs at night.

The wide pedestrian boulevard of La Rambla is lined with trees, cafés, restaurants, florists and shops. Don’t miss to taste the famous and absolutely delicious tapas, the excellent Penedés wine, the Pa amb tomàquet (slice of bread with tomato) and the mouthwatering Gambes al’allet (garlic prawns).

Visit the Mercat de la Boquería, a popular market where you’ll find fresh food. You can also visit the El Portal de l’Àngel, a large pedestrian walkway with many new and stylish shops to browse in. Shopping fans can head to Gràcia, 1 km north of the centre of Barcelona at the north end of the Passeig de Gràcia.

Customer reviews

  • "Great"
Train was comfy , and reached distination in time, instructions in 3 languages, just hope they are said slower Thank you
  • "Disappointing"
This train was 1 1/2 hours late arriving in Barcelona. It stopped (not at a station) frequently for long periods at a time during the journey, which we could not understand. The train would no sooner pick up speed after having been stopped for 5 - 15 minutes and then it would slow down and stop again. It was a tedious trip.
  • "Bright lights"
Please turn the bright lights off on the train at night. I caught the train from Barcelona to Madrid overnight and was hoping to sleep but the bright lights were left on all night which made sleep very difficult. This made my journey uncomfortable. If this one thing were resolved I believe the comfort of my travel would have been much higher. Please consider this hospitable practice. Thank you.
  • "Excellent Service"
Thank you Rail Europe for the excellent service. You made our train travel from Barcelona to Madrid pleasant and comfortable.
  • "Barcelona to Madrid return "
Good return journey from Barcelona to Madrid and back, tourista class.. Comfortable seats. Speedy journey. Preferred to flying which overall would probably have taken longer. Would have been nice to have English subtitles on the film that was showing. The shared blinds (with the passengers in front and behind, meant that if one person wanted the window blinds closed it affected everyone. I wanted to see the view and that wasn't possible as some else wanted the blinds closed. Good facilities in the on board shop. Screaming children meant the headphones handed out free were worth their weight in gold !
  • "Kiwis on Italian trains"
We had a great trip from Bari to Rome. This was a fast train and arrived in Rome on time so we were able to get to the airport in time for our transfer to Glasgow. Seats were comfortable, We loved the scenery - a good way to see a bit more of the Italian countryside. A good experience.
  • "Safety?"
I would feel more safe with a seatbelt at the speed of this train . In case of a derailment seatbelts will save many lives. Thank You.
  • "a good journey from Barcelona "
I just traveled a round trip from Barcelona to Bilbao. Actually it was a long journey but the experience was good. The train was clean and the service was good. The food at train was also at good quality.
  • "Barcelona to San Sebastian "
Train ride was fantastic, I had a little issue with tickets, missing one train, but managed to get on another train the following day at no extra cost.
  • "Barcelona to Madrid"
From booking on internet through to the end of the trip it all was easy and efficient. It was helped by accidentally booking accommodation near both stations. Definitely recommended as alternative to flying and missing the scenery and probably saving no time.
  • "cafeteria"
The cafeteria services was very slow and not all menu items were available
  • "it was good."
It was a comfortable trip. We all enjoyed. Thanks
  • "First Class"
I found the seating, luggage space, toilet and cafeteria car service all consistent with my expectations of first class rail travel.
  • "Bull Run in Pamplona"
I recently traveled to Pamplona for San Fermin. As it was a busy time of year we had pre-booked our tickets which was a good thing as the train was packed with many rowdy tourists on their way to Pamplona. My only complaint was that we left the train station in Barcelona an hour after the scheduled time and no reason was given as to why. Otherwise, it was a good trip.
  • "Unforgettable trip"
It was a really good experience to travel by train. I do have only one notice. The food was pork which we as Muslim don't eat. If it possible to give varieties for passengers to choose their meal. In overall everything was great.
