Sweden : SJ
Statens Järnvägar’s (SJ) vision is to convince as many people in Sweden as possible to travel by train.
The idea is working so far, travel with SJ trains is increasing at over twice the rate seen in the passenger transport sector as a whole. And they currently carry around 70,000 passengers a day through their 350 stations.
SJ trains operate the Arlanda Express, the fastest and most environmentally friendly way to get from Arlanda Airport to Stockholm City, taking just 20 minutes. They also operate the X 2000 trains, which run on long-distance routes offering a comfortable way to get from A to B. SJ trains have spent millions renovating their InterCity carriages and since the summer of 2009 they’ve rolled out two new trailers every week.
SJ trains work daily to reduce their environmental footprint, with all trains powered by electricity. As SJ trains only buy renewable electricity from hydroelectric and wind-powered sources, the trains cause minimal emissions.
