Croatia : HZ

Croatian Railways’ (HZ Hrvatske Zeljeznice) network is centred around its capital Zagreb.

Croatia’s train schedule offers an intersection of routes within Europe, plus the shortest connection from central Europe to the Adriatic and the Mediterranean.

Croatia’s train schedule connects all major Croatian cities, except Dubrovnik. To visit Dubrovnik, travel by train to Split, then take the bus for Dubrovnik. Since 2004, the new 160kph ‘tilting trains’ that connect Zagreb with Split and other major Croatian cities like Rijeka and Osijek have been progressively introduced to Croatia’s train schedule. Extra-comfortable and faster too, Zagreb-Split now takes 5.5 hours instead of 9 and Osijek is 3 (other trains take around 4.5 hours).

Eurail Passes offer flexible rail travel with options like the Eurail Croatia-Slovenia-Hungary Pass. There are direct lines from Austria, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Germany, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy and Greece. For a scenic ride past mountains, lakes and even vineyards, check the Croatia train schedule for the Zagreb-Split route.

Reservations are compulsory on the Intercity (IC) from Zagreb-Rijeka/Osijek/Cakovec and on the fast ICN Zagreb-Split train. We also recommend reservations for express trains. Local trains usually have only unreserved second-class seats while ‘executive trains’ are first-class only. Check Croatia’s train schedule for details.
